Arthur Hiller Penn is an American film, television and theater director and producer. Closely linked to the American New Wave, Penn made critically acclaimed films throughout the 1960s such as the television series The Chase, the biographical crime film Bonnie and Clyde, and the cinematic comedy Alice's Restaurant. He also drew attention to his Western revisionist Little Big Man. In the mid-1970s, his films were received with much less enthusiasm. In the 1990s, he returned to the stage and directed television and production, notably as an executive producer for the crime series Law & Order. Prior to his death in 2010, he was nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Director, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, two Emmy Awards and two Guild of America Director Awards. He is the recipient of several honorary awards, including the Golden Bear Honors, the Tony Award and the Akira Kurosawa Prize from the San Francisco International Film Festival.
