Alchemy is a branch of ancient natural philosophy, a philosophical and anti-scientific tradition practiced throughout Europe, Africa, China, and all of Asia, as Chinese texts from around 73 to 49 show. Common targets are chrysopoeia, which converts "base metal" into "precious metal"; the creation of the elixir of immortality; the creation of panacea capable of curing all diseases; and the development of alkanes, a universal solvent. It is believed that the perfection of the human body and soul is allowed either as a result of alchemy magic and, in the mysterious Greek and Western traditions, perfection of alchemy. In Europe, the creation of a philosopher's stone is related differently to all these projects.
