Stephen Robert Irwin, nicknamed "Crocodile Hunter", is an Australian zookeeper, television personality, wildlife expert, environmentalist and conservationist. Irwin gained worldwide fame thanks to the television series The Crocodile Hunter, an international series of wildlife documentaries that he co-hosts with his wife Terri. The couple also host the Croc Files series, The Crocodile Hunter Diaries, and New Breed Vets. They also co-own and operate Zoo Australia, founded by Irwin's parents in Beerwah, about 80 kilometers north of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. Irwin died on September 4, 2006 after being stabbed in the chest by a stingray while filming on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. His death became international news and welcomed by fans, the media, governments, nonprofits and other celebrities with expressions of shock and grief. Many parks, zoos, streets and an asteroid have been named in his honor.
