Throughout his career, he has been recognized as one of the top stop players at the NHL. Later, he worked as assistant coach for the Niagara Purple Eagles and Rochester American. McKee was born in Kingston, Ontario, but raised in Loyalist, Ontario. After working as a coach at AHL and NCAA, McKee served as an assistant coach of Erie Otters. After a season at Erie, McKee was promoted to coach for Kitchener Rangers. A season later, he was promoted to OHL's Kitchener Rangers head coach, where he served as head coach for three and a half seasons before moving on.
