He was influenced by Louis Armstrong and Louis Jordan and said that the highest note he can hit on the trumpet is the high C. He often accompanies his songs with his own voice. Most of his groups perform by New Orleans jazz standards, although he has composed several of his own as well. Jon Pareles of the New York Times wrote: "Mr. Ruffins was a flawless performer, a trumpeter with a bright, silvery tone, singing charmingly and never abusing his material."
