Taylor played his entire professional career as a defenseman for the New York Giants in the National Football League. After an all-American career at the University of North Carolina, Taylor was drafted by the Giants as the second principal contender in the 1981 NFL Draft. Despite the controversy surrounding the selection due to Taylor's contract demands, the party quickly solved the problem. Taylor won several defense awards after his rookie season. Taylor was both the first and only current NFL player to win the AP NFL Player of the Year award in his rookie season.
