Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a Turkish politician who holds the current presidency of Turkey. Previously, he was Prime Minister of Turkey from 2003 to 2014 and mayor of Istanbul from 1994 to 1998. He founded the Justice and Development Party in 2001, leading it to victory in the elections held in 2002, 2007 and 2011 before being asked to resign after being elected president in 2014. He then returned to lead AKP in 2017 following a referendum on the constitution that year. Coming from an Islamic politics and describing himself as a conservative Democrat, he promoted populist and socially conservative policies during his tenure. In the 1994 election as a candidate for the Islamic Socialist Party, he was elected mayor of Istanbul. Later, he was dismissed, banned from political office and imprisoned for four months for inciting religious hatred, for reciting a poem by Ziya Gökalp.
