Vincent Louis Gigante, also known as "the Chin", was an American gangster who was the boss of a Genoese crime family from 1981 to 2005 in New York City. Gigante started out as a professional boxer who fought in 25 matches from 1944 to 1947. Then he began working as a mafia enforcer for what was then the criminal family Luciano, money relatives of the Genoese family. Gigante is one of five brothers; Three of them, Mario, Pasquale and Ralph, followed him into the Mafia. Only one brother, Louis, still escaped the criminal family, becoming a priest instead. Gigante was the gunman in the failed assassination of longtime Luciano boss Frank Costello in 1957. In 1959, he was sentenced to 7 years in prison for drug trafficking, and after sharing a cell with his rival . From Costello, Vito Genovese, Gigante becomes a con man overseeing his own crew of Genoese soldiers and associates operating in Greenwich Village. Gigante quickly took power in the 1960s and 1970s.
